Luke 10:38-42 KJV
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Notes:
· Don’t miss out on Jesus!
In verse 42, Jesus tells us that Mary chose correctly and what she has won’t be taken away. God’s word cannot be taken away. Heaven and earth will pass away but God’s word will remain (Mathew 24:35). All the earthly distractions and activities we were involved with will all pass away, but the most important thing, God's word, will always remain.
· Jesus said one thing is needful. What do we truly need? God. Without Him, we are nothing (John 15:5, Genesis 3:19). God has given us the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). Without God we would not be alive.
· Martha had an opportunity to fellowship with Jesus but was distracted. She missed the good part. Don’t miss your opportunity to spend time with God.
· Keep God first, don’t allow distractions to get in the way of fellowship with God.
· Be obedient and be prepared to do the work God has called you to do.
· We must fellowship with God to effectively carry out the work God has assigned us.
· Deadlines can become a distraction – Let God lead us in carrying out our assignments without focusing on timing but trusting God’s perfect timing.
· Constantly grow in God, do not become stagnant in Spirit. Don’t allow distractions to hinder your growth. Every day we must seek the word of God and learn of Him.
Mathew 11:28-29 KJV
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Don’t allow distractions to keep you from reading and studying the word of God.
· The Bible is the living word, Jesus is the word! (John 1:1). We need Jesus to live. We learn more about Jesus through the word of God.
Mathew 4:4 KJV
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
· Where was Martha’s mind? Keep your mind on Jesus.
Isaiah 26:3 KJV
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
· Focus on Jesus and you will continue to grow in the knowledge of God.
2 Peter 3:17-18 KJV
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
The word strengthens us and warns of us of the plots and schemes of the enemy. If we are aware of deceptive schemes we can avoid being trapped in them. We become aware of what we are to avoid through the word. We also become aware of how we should behave and treat others. We must continue to grow in Christ and be more like Him every day. When we grow in God we are conforming to the image of Christ and not the world (Romans 8:29, 12:2). In Hosea 4:6, God reminds us, my people perish for lack of knowledge. The knowledge we need is the word of God. We are not ignorant of satan’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11), distraction is a tool of the enemy to keep us from growing in God. However, God has given us all power over the enemy (Luke 10:19). We must yield to God, triumphing over things that could become distractions and stay devoted to the word of the Lord. Refuse to allow the enemy to hinder your growth and choose to spend time with God rather than the things of the world.
Questions:
1. How are you growing in God?
2. What scripture has God revealed to you or placed on your heart as you studied the word of God recently?
3. How do you encourage others to strengthen their walk with God?
